Killarney algae fight moves forward

Killarney algae fight moves forward

0 Comments | Brandon Sun, The, Jun 7, 2010 | by Austin, Jillian

Plans to help ease the algae problem on Killarney Lake are steadily moving forward.

By the end of June, the town hopes to have a specially-designed algae skimmer in the water.

“We’re hoping that it will be able to remove a significant amount of algae, at least from the beach area,” said Jay Struth, chair of the Killarney Lake Action Committee.

Brothers Mike and John Bellew of Kiwi Welding have been busy working to develop a prototype skimmer, just in time for the summer season.

“We’re halfway done, we’re hoping by the end of June it’ll be ready for the lake,” Mike Bellew said. “It’s going to be just a trial-and-error sort of thing. There are no machines like this at all manufactured anywhere. We’ve started from scratch and worked our way through it.”

The Bellew brothers consulted with Rick Korman’s Grade 11 and 12 environmental class, which designed a skimmer as a class project. They took their ideas and got to work.

The skimmer is designed as a conveyor system on top of a 25-foot pontoon boat, driven by a three-cylinder diesel engine.

“The holes in the belting are the same size as a bug screen,” Mike said. With algae being very fine, Mike said the screen had to be small enough to sift the green organism out of the water.

Once it comes up the conveyor belt, Mike said they will make up some sort of “catching basket,” that will be modified once they realize the volume of the algae.

“To me, I think it’s very important to help clean up the lake which is our biggest draw,” Mike said. “It’s a nice beach, if we can clean up the water and make it a little bit better to swim in.”

The skimmer is just one of the goals realized by the Killarney Lake Action Committee. At the beginning of May, a fountain was installed in the bay to agitate and aerate the water. The goal is to increase oxygen to the water and improve the overall health of the bay.

There has also been a public education campaign through the Killarney Guide, to let citizens know about important water quality issues and encourage responsible use of fertilizers.

“We’re trying a lot of different things here. In between the combination of them all, we’re hoping to see some significant improvements in our lake water quality,” said the mayor of the municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain, Rick Pauls, who is also a member of the action committee. “We’re fairly excited, but we’re definitely cautious optimists.”

Struth said the committee is looking forward to see how the summer initiatives go

When one transaction is finished,

When one transaction is finished, they?ll say, ?Next??

If the customer they’ve called is off somewhere, chatting or not paying attention, a second later and that word comes flying out again: ?Next!?

One transaction is done and all attention is paid to you guessed it, the one coming up.

This, as I see it, is a beautiful Zen metaphor, a reminder that when you give everything to what is happening NOW, you get the payoff called the ?pleasantness of presentness.?

It?s essential we do this, whether we?re in sales, customer service, management, and especially in the mechanical arts, such as school bus driving or flying planes. The past is interesting, and it may even contain lessons, but we?ll get to those in the future, when we can give over our entire consciousness to them.

But NOW, we need to address the things relevant to what is in front of us.

Sellers, especially when the next prospect pops up in front of them, as on the phone, have to wipe away vestiges of the last one, especially if it was negative.

Service people can?t blame all customers, or make this one atone for the sins of the last.

And drivers and pilots can?t spend a second considering the debris that they just avoided.

BBC's new Lennon film has sound of Valhalla

BBC’s new Lennon film has sound of Valhalla

0 Comments | Western Morning News, The, Jun 23, 2010

A Cornwall-based production company brought its expertise to a new BBC film about music legend John Lennon due to be broadcast tonight.

Actor Christopher Eccleston takes the lead role in Lennon Naked which charts the transition of Lennon from Beatle to counter culture icon.

David Smithers, managing director and lead sound designer at Valhalla Audio, Falmouth, moved from London to Cornwall three years ago.

The company adds sound effects to a film or piece of animation, such as a car passing, gunfire or a bird.

The firm’s past work includes two series of the BBC’s flagship forensic drama Silent Witness and last summer’s six-part hit comedy Mutual Friends.

He said: “Typically, an hour’s worth of television drama sound design will take two weeks to prep at the studio in Falmouth, followed by two to three days final mixing in a larger studio in London, Bristol, Manchester or further afield.

“This final mix stage brings together the director, producer, and executives to sign off the sound mix for the show.”

Valhalla has been undertaking more and more local work including a recent collaboration with Hayle-based CGI Studio TigerX to produce the sound for Venus Rock a piece about a luxury hotel and golf complex in Cyprus.

David said: “It was always the plan to work with the local business community and assist with their audio requirements.

“Valhalla is not just about television and film work.

“I still love making radio adverts and producing audio marketing materials for local companies large and small.

Lennon Naked is due to be broadcast tonight at 9.30pm on BBC4.

Practice body language. Body language is a

Practice body language.

Body language is a big part of conversation and an easy way to start overcoming shyness. You do not have to say anything just use your body to respond. Once you feel comfortable using body language then you can move on into conversations.

2. Figure out why you are shy.

The best way to fix a problem is to figure out why you have the problem. Getting to that reason will allow you to be able to fix problems and start getting over being shy.

3. Simply pretend you are not shy.

This is where acting skills come in useful. It is best to try this with people you do not know. When we are with people we know it is easy to play the shy part, but with strangers they do not expect you to be shy so it is easy to act as if you are outgoing.

4. Make yourself feel and look good.

If you enter into a social situation feeling confident about yourself it is much easier to be more outgoing and drop the shyness.

Make sure you make it a point to leave your house everyday feeling good about how you look and feeling like a wonderful person.

Advising couples on finances

Advising couples on finances

0 Comments | Buffalo News, Jul 12, 2010 | by Michelle Singletary

In my online discussions, I frequently get questions from couples facing financial issues.

Q: I’m getting married next summer and my fiance and I are in a lot of debt. We live together and have two kids. There is a breakdown in communication when it comes to our finances. I’ve recommended we talk to a credit counselor, but he shuts down and doesn’t want to talk about it. He did agree to go to premarital counseling. I don’t know where to begin to get out of debt. I’ve tried to budget. I feel overwhelmed.

This is fine during formal

This is fine during formal sessions but if you ever want a dog
that works for you without the need of treats then you should start using things like going out side, feeding time, in and out of cars, walks and other situations you will encounter for rewards.

One example is feeding time. Have your dog sit and wait while you put the bowl down and then say “Okay” to release your dog from the wait.

This teaches three things at once and the food is the reward.

: Lower the bar. Dogs, like people, have their moments. Expecting them to be perfect all the time results in setting yourself and your dog up for failure. While training is supposed to be taken seriously, sometimes it’s taken too seriously.

Lower the bar and your expectations. If your dog understands a cue but fails to do it, try another cue and then go back to the one they failed to do after they have successfully completed the second behavior.

This will help your dog stay focused and be successful.

High expectations during dog training usually result in frustrated owners and confused dogs.

You tried to finesse your bunker shot

You tried to finesse your bunker shot to get it near the hole, and you left your ball in the sand. Bad thinking.

Stop thinking about your score. Just think what is important and do it. The important thing is to get your ball on the green. Even if this means that your ball will most likely finish on the other side of the green. At least you are on and where you may have been if your pitch had found the green. You would have needed two puts from where your pitch finished. The only difference was your gentle excursion into the bunker which at most should only
cost your one shot.

Do this first, and then you can think about putting.

They feel guilt-ridden, having too many

They feel guilt-ridden, having too many unfinished tasks on their conscience. They get into something, then something else comes up and they give that something else attention while they leave the first thing unattended and so on and so on. Too many loose ends. They seldom finish things before going on to the next thing, and yet they leave their attention on the unfinished projects or wishes. They don’t even end them in their minds, so they are kept in a constant state of distraction, their concentration dispersed, and then they judge themselves on all those things they haven’t done. Instead of treating these individuals with antidepressants, tranquilizers, barbiturates or other goodies, instead of beating to death their childhood or past life traumas, it would suffice to teach them step by step how to control their attention and how to finish what they began.

An inability to control one?s attention may be regarded as ?just another symptom,? and consequently, treatment may be aimed at something else. Yet learning to control one?s attention could cure many psychological disorders. Your energy is your ability to focus your attention where you wish.
